Glaucoma is a common eye condition that affect a large number of population. It could also lead to blindness without corrective measures. Glaucoma occurs when the optic nerve suffers damage and the abnormal movement of Aqueous Humor or the fluid that regulates the eyes. Normally the eyes are regulated by Aqueous Humor fluid which constantly flows within the eyes. If the Aqueous Humor extensively or insufficiently supplies the eyes it could increase eye pressure and cause damage to the optic nerve. At the onset, Glaucoma does not show any symptoms. It only show symptoms once it has spread. The symptoms include narrowing of visual field that could lead to loss of sight. This is the cause for regular visual tests (including optic nerve) every 2-4 years whether or not there is abnormal vision.

Investigative technology of the optic nerve and optic disc with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) instrument is able to accurately analyze the abnormality of the eyes. The technique enables physicians to examine the cross section of the eyes through laser procedure to measure the refraction rates of different layers of the optic nerve (the optic nerve is made up of 10 different layers), the depth of the optic disc and the thickness of the optic nerve which cannot be monitored by other means.

The OCT image is highly optimized with the resolution of 0.01 mm. This enables the physicians to diagnose the severity of the Glaucoma and other eye condtions, such as, central retinal vein occlusion, macular tear, epiretinal membrane, retinal detachment and abnormality of the optic nerve vein. Furthermore, OCT can also analyze and monitor the severity of glaucoma in the long term accurately, quickly, invasively.

At risk glaucoma patients via OCT

  • Age above 40 years old
  • Chronic retina inflammation sufferers
  • Family history of Glaucoma
  • Chronic use of steroid-based anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Had an accident or operation on the eyes
  • Has chronic conditions, such as, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol
  • Severe near or farsighted
