High Cholesterol Leads to Heart Disease
High cholester is a leading cause of cardio and vascular disease. This could accumulate from cholesterol or triglyceride level that is higher than average or both. High cholesterol leads to hardening, blockage and clogged blood vessels in the future.
High Cholesterol Factors
- Obesity or overweight
- Lack of exercise
- Chronic smoking or drinking
- Consumption of food with high cholesterol
- Thyroid, diabetes, kidney disease or medication
Genetics High Cholesterol (Familial Hypercholesterolemia - FH)
This is the most common type of genetic disorder or mutation of LDL-R, ApoB, PCSK-9 genes that regulate the level of cholesterol. This leads to LDL-C, the bad cholesterol, deposit in the blood stream clogs the artery and, in turn, causes bloackage and heart failure or stroke. Other complication arisen from the build up of LDL-C is the accumulation of fatty cells in joints and tendons, hypodermis called xanthomas.
There are 2 Types of Mutations
- Heterozygous FH - single gene, by inheriting high cholesterol genetics disorder from father or mother with cholesterol level between 350-500 mg/dl
- Homozygous FH - two genes, inherited from both fatehr and mother causing a severe increase in cholesterol level between 500-1,000 mg/dl leading to high risk of heart failure and untimely death
The most severe symptom is heart failure and death but the risk can be managed by taking hypolipidaemic agents which dramatically reduces heart failure in patients.
Investigation and Treatment
If you are concerned and wanted to screen for high cholesterol genetic disorder and the risks that come with it. Or, hypolipidaemic agents does not help the condition. The high cholesterol genetic disorder can be investigated before prescribing specific medication for the condition. A strict diet and exercise as recommended by physician must be maintained to reduce the risk of heart failure and ischemic heart disease.
